No more Ugly Club: Street art tour with Don Monet

Sunday, June 22nd 2008

MuralAlong with Miss Vicky at offhand.ca we’ve been following the news about public art and the Wellington Street road reconstruction. Local artist Don Monet was part of a team whose concept didn’t make the short list for the quarter million dollar commission, but that hasn’t stopped his ongoing interest in bringing art to the streetscape.

Here he guides us in a walking tour of a the micro-district along Hamilton Avenue and Spencer Street. Up until recently so blighted on the inside, where it meets the street this block has probably the greatest concentration of mural effects in the entire district.

    Hi, Evan;
    I enjoyed this video tour. Like Don, I think public art can enhance the environment by showing visitors and residents what goes on around here. Since you posted this story, I have done another mural for JD Upholstry, on Spencer near Parkdale, of Jack (the owner) at work. This is a proud neighbourhood and it shows in the interest people are taking in the appearance and condition of their businesses.
